Alphabet Project

The Alphabet project as laid out in the brief:

"Students will identify distinct representations of the letters of the alphabet in the environment and record a full set of letters, A-Z, using digital photography. The set must demonstrate engagement of the following elements:
1. Shutter speed and aperture priority modes: Sports, Night portrait, Portrait, Landscape and Macro
2.Research a photographer whose work is appealing to you (Home page) and identify the visual, aesthetic qualities that characterize their work. Then apply this to at least four of the alphabet letters in your set."

A
'A': On a walk down O'Connell street I spotted this A, tourists were very interested in why I was taking a photograph of a menu board. Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: portrait.

B
'B': B started off as a pair of fairy wings from an old costume but walking through Dublin I saw this monument and snapped a quick picture. Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: back light.

C
'C': C proved a lot harder than first thought trying to find it around town was an impossible task I spent a whole day just trying to find this letter, however once home was making myself a cup of tea and found what I had been looking for. They say tea cures every problem!! Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: Portrait.

D
'D': D was simply spotted on my way home, annoyed by a bike leaning against the wall outside my house... by the way whom ever you are, you are forgiven as you gave me my D!! Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: Macro.

E
'E': Possibly my favorite of the project because of the way it was found. Sitting in a lecture looking around the room I spotted it and had to then wait till the end to get up and snap it quick still getting some very strange look from others. Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: Portrait.

F
'F': F I tried a slightly more abstract approach to this letter as I had a few more obvious possibilities but thought i'd try out a different approach. Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: back light.

G
'G': The most fun to take had great fun playing with sparklers, I put my camera on self timer and rested it on my balcony so that I could write the letter as well as take the photograph. Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: Firework (slower shutter speed).

H
'H': H my favorite letter for obvious reasons found in not my favorite place, Bank of Ireland. Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: Macro.

I
'I': I was taken in a methodology class again spotted by chance as I wondered why there was a repeat pattern of strip lights and vents and why there was so many vents in one room anyway?... i'm still wondering. Taken with my phone Samsung Genio.

J
'J': J took a lot of searching, one letter I found very frustrating by spotted it on the back of a hardware store trolley. Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: Macro.

K
'K': K is the statue of a monument on O'Connell street in Dublin. Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: landscape.

L
'L': I picked this gate way as my L purely because I found it so interesting the pattern of the metal against the buildings brick caught my eye and it produced a bold letter. Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: portrait.

M
'M': I often pass this sculpture on way to get a cheeky hot chocolate from Starbucks however this weekend its usual fountains which sprays water all over the form were not on and I spotted the letter which I had never seen before. The perfect M for this project. Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: back light.

N
'N': The unusable fireplace, drives me mad to have one that cannot be used however in this circumstance it became very useful as the letter N. Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: Portrait.

O
'O': Taken more for the effect that the aperture Macro can give more than its qualities as an O. Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: back light.

P
'P': My very first letter found around Dublin, however first seen as a long shot in whether it would work as a letter due to the difficulty of capturing it. Always in Shadow and so high up it proved to be a difficult letter to take. Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: back light.

Q
'Q': i like this Q as taking it was like looking through a spy hole, spotted on the back of a trailer. Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: Portrait.

R
'R': R more affectionately known as the ddiirrttyy sink. another abstract attempt, though I like the reflections made in the metal. Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: portrait.

S
'S': Railings outside one of the trinity college buildings, using my influenced methods from an artist I used Photoshop to pick out one S amongst the railings. Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: Portrait.

T
'T': I like the contrast in this photograph and the balance the red T of the Photoshop crane gives to the image. Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: Landscape.

U
'U': The arms of the statue on this monument on O'Connell street form the U for this project. Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: back light.

v
'V': On entering a pub on Dame street I noticed this harp and the V that it held, lucky rely that I keep my camera on me at all times, i'd be lost without it.Taken my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: Macro.

W
'W': Another letter found on Dame street crossing the road i noticed these street lamps and the shape that they made. Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: Landscape.

X
'X': A boarded up window on a house on the Quays formed my X. Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: Landscape.

Y
'Y': Found in my favorite place to take a walk in Dublin, Temple bar always filled with activity. I had to wait a long time before tourists had moved on to get to take this photography. Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: back light.

Z
'Z': An attempt at a sports finish shot. Taken by resting the camera on a door handle and on self timer mode. Taken on my compact Nikon 3X optical zoom, aperture: Sports.

  1. Very interesting and well thought out use of everyday objects to portray the letters of the alphabet.

The use of landmarks in Dublin to show these letters is also a very creative way to show the thought behind each of the pictures, for example the letters M and U

I also think it shows initiative in the use of a sparkler to create the letter G,

All in all a very creative way to show the letters of the alphabet, it is clear to see a lot of thought has gone into finding these letters throughout Dublin
